Ettore Sottsass was one of the masters of twentieth-century Italian design: architect, designer, photographer and writer. In the 1980s he founded the Memphis movement and revolutionised design with emotional, expressive objects. From 1955 he designed ceramics for the Raymor Company of New York, a key Bitossi client, and began a long collaboration with the manufacture.
The piece belongs to the ceramics of the Galleria Il Sestante catalogue, distributed by Bitossi Ceramiche since 1986. The catalogue gathers historic series such as Bowls and Vases, Spools and Insulators, Ashtrays and Step Vases. Each piece is still made with the techniques and materials of the originals in Montelupo Fiorentino, where Bitossi was founded in 1921. The same cake stand is also made in a larger size. Paired with a Sottsass vase, it creates a graphic black and white still life on a sideboard.

100% Made in Italy
The Bitossi Ceramiche ETTORE SOTTSASS cake stand is a small architectural object for the table. A wide, shallow bowl rests on a slender neck and a solid domed foot. Fine concentric rings are drawn inside the rim. The matte white bowl contrasts sharply with the matte black base. It is a design by one of the masters of Italian design, still made in Tuscany. Use it for sweets or fruit, or leave it empty as a pure form. Its compact size suits a coffee table, a breakfast table or a small console, and it pairs well with the other Sottsass pieces.
